SCORP IN BRIEF

Human rights are for everyone so it’s important for us as the youth of today and future healthcare workers to use our voice to advocate for human rights and empower those who need empowerment, and that’s exactly what we do in SCORP or The Standing Committee on Human Rights and Peace!

In SCORP we have 2 focus areas; Health equity and Gender based Violence and gender equity, we also have one project which is Together against Stigma. Through which, we focus on empowering the right holders and capacitating the duty bearers to ensure that everyone can live in peace, without discrimination and with dignity.

SCORP

Vision

IFMSA-Egypt’s SCORP is to be the most renowned, recognized, respected, and sustainable human rights advocacy entity by and for medical students.

SCORP

Mission

IFMSA-Egypt’s SCORP mission is to work on enrooting the principles of human rights advocacy in the day to day lives of medical students through human rights education, and to create a non-discriminatory, diverse, and inclusive environment where human rights & peace are promoted by all means.

SCORP

History

In 1983, the Standing Committee on Refugees was formed, aiming to call attention to the problems faced by the displaced population and participate in relief efforts. The committee members soon realized that these efforts were merely palliative, whereas a sustainable solution would have to address the root of the problem – violence, conflicts and human rights violations.

In 1995, the committee changed the name to the Standing Committee on Refugees and Peace, and finally, in 2005 it became the SCORP that we know today, the Standing Committee on Human Rights and Peace.

In Egypt, SCORP was initiated in 2007, to gather medical students from different universities around Egypt and guide them to advocate for humanitarian issues and promote relevant projects in Egypt.

Our Focus Areas & Projects

Health Equity

Health equity encompasses not only distributive justice as an ethical principle, but also core human rights principles such as nondiscrimination and equality,  the indivisibility and interdependence of rights, the right to a standard of living adequate for health; the right to education; and the right to the highest attainable standard of health. Our role as a human rights and peace committee, is to support and promote health equity as a concept and that is why we have health equity as a focus area.

Gender Based Violence

The gender based violence & gender equity focus area  is one of the most important focus areas in IFMSA-Egypt, as all its topics directly and explicitly affect many human rights. Under the umbrella of Gender-Based Violence and Gender Equality, there are millions of people who need SCORPions to stand up in their name for their lives. Therefore, this focus area is very sensitive because it includes many topics that affect the lives of many people. This area is divided into two parts, a part on gender-based violence and a part on gender equality. GBV [gender based violence] : is violence directed against a person because of their gender This part includes many topics such as domestic violence, intimate partner violence, harassment, rape, human trafficking and more. GE [Gender Equality]: is when people of all genders have equal rights, responsibilities and opportunities This part includes many topics such as inequality, women’s empowerment, feminism, patriarchy and more..

Together Against Stigma

Stigma and discrimination in healthcare or as we call it Together Against Stigma “TAS” is the only project in SCORP. It spots the light on the definitions of stigma and discrimination, and how such violations are committed in the healthcare field and how they inevitably influence the process of providing healthcare services. In this project we discuss many topics such as, but not limited to, medical ethics , Patients’ and Doctors’ rights and duties, Doctor-patient relationship, vulnerable groups in healthcare settings and how climate change influences the stigma cycle in the healthcare settings.
